The hare and
the tortoise
A hare was very proud of his speed. He would laugh at the
tortoise because of its slow speed. The hare invited the tortoise to take part
in a race with him. The tortoise agreed. He understood that the hare was trying
to hurt and humiliate him. One morning the race began. The hare ran fast and
the tortoise ran slowly. The hare decided to take rest for sometime under a
tree. As the hare was resting, he fell
asleep. The tortoise moved on and on. He was slow but when the hare woke up he
saw that the tortoise left him far behind. Thus the tortoise was winner in the
race.
o Moral : Slow and steady wins the race.
The
Woodcutter and his axe
A woodcutter was cutting trees on the bank of a river.
Suddenly his axe slipped from his hand and fell into the river. After losing
his axe, the poor woodcutter began to cry loudly. On hearing his lamentation,
the water god appeared before him, and learnt from him all. Then he dived into
the river. The god brought a golden axe to him and asked, “Is this yours ?”
“No, it is not mine,” replied the woodcutter. The water god dived again, and
brought a silver axe from the river. The woodcutter said, “This one also is not
mine.” At last, the water god brought the wood-cutter’s axe. The the wood
cutter was filled with joy. ‘‘That’s mine ! That’s mine!” he cried out. The
water god gave poor but honest wood-cutter all the three axes as a reward.

A cart man
& God
Once a cart man was driving his cart along a muddy road. It was a rainy
day. Suddenly one of the wheels got stuck in a mud-hole. The cart man beat the
bullocks severely to make them put out the cart, but in vain. At last he sat
helplessly by the road side. He prayed to god Hercules for help. The god
appeared before him. He advised the cart man to put his shoulder to the wheel
and try to push the cart out. The cart man acted upon his advice. The bullocks
too pulled hard and the cart began to move on.

Moral: God helps
those who help themselves.
